Doherty began her acting career as a child, appearing in several television shows and films. She gained fame in the 1990s for her role as Brenda Walsh on the popular teen drama "Beverly Hills, 90210." She went on to star in the supernatural drama "Charmed" from 1998 to 2001.

In 2015, Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent treatment and was declared cancer-free in 2017. However, the cancer returned in 2019, and she announced in February that it had spread to her lymph nodes.
